Cut-Out Creatures

Cut-Out Creatures is an illustration experiment rooted in play. It began with my personal collection of zigzag scissors—children’s craft tools often used for playful decoration and DIY projects. These scissors, with their variety of blade patterns, became the key instruments in shaping the edges of paper cut-outs, giving each character a distinct texture and personality.

I started by creating animal-inspired forms, letting the scissor patterns suggest textures like fur, feathers, or skin. Sharp, jagged cuts evoked carnivorous energy, while rounded edges felt more docile—like farm animals. Throughout the process, I shared some of the creatures online and invited people to suggest animals they’d like to see. Often, the animals they chose seemed to reflect something about themselves.

The final works were turned into stickers—making them fun, tactile, and easily shareable, especially with children. I also gifted each participant a sticker of the creature they inspired. This playful method of using a childhood tool has opened up new ways for me to explore illustration and storytelling.
